How Kids Change Your Life

Everyone knows that when you decide to have a baby, you’ll be giving up certain things. You know your days of spontaneous trips are over, and that you’ll have to plan for romantic dinners in quiet restaurants. You’ll give up sleeping through the night and definitely sleeping-in on the weekend. For the next 18 years, [...]

Learning Through Stories

Through my years of teaching elementary school and trying to complete my Masters degree, I have learned a lot about how children build their comprehension skills. In some ways, it is a natural growing process, but in an entirely different way, it can be learned, practiced, and nurtured. I have been doing a lot of reading and research about the classical method and the Charlotte Mason method of teaching and spent a year teaching these methods in a classical school. I was thoroughly impressed with the results of using narration to grow reading comprehension and the retention of facts, and the ability to begin applying those facts. This is a simple activity you can do with your children during storytime, or homework reading, or with their schoolwork if you are homeschooling. I have found Catherine Levison’s summary of narration in her book A Charlotte Mason Education to be simple and helpful for kids of all ages.
